Representative Steven Horsford, currently serving in the U.S. Congress for Nevada’s 4th district, took to social media to discuss the importance of historical preservation. Addressing the role that institutions like the Smithsonian play in maintaining historical narrative, "Why This Matters: Without institutions like the Smithsonian, capturing those struggles for posterity, it is impossible to pursue a more perfect union as our Constitution calls each of us to do.” Erasing history weakens democracy. In another statement, Horsford emphasized the necessity of safeguarding institutions that document America's complete history, particularly those amplifying marginalized voices. He stated, "We Can’t Let This Happen: We must protect and invest in institutions that preserve the full story of America---especially those that uplift marginalized voices. Silence and erasure allow history to repeat itself." (March 28, 2025).

Further reinforcing his stance, Horsford urged collective action for historical preservation with a checklist: “ Stay informed. Support institutions preserving history. Fight back against efforts to erase the truth. Our collective memory is a tool for progress. Let’s ensure the next generation knows the full story.” (March 28, 2025).
