The American Indian Higher Education Consortium Board of Directors held their 2022 meeting from July 13-15 at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)'s Harrah College of Hospitality.

According to a press release shared by the university, the organization that directs public policy with regards to higher education among American Indian and Alaska Native is the AHEC Board of Directors, which consists of the presidents of the 35 tribal higher education schools throughout the U.S.

“We are honored to share our campus with the AIHEC for its summer meeting,” said UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield in the release. “For 50 years, the AIHEC and its member institutions have been dedicated to lifting up sovereign nations through education. This meeting celebrates their inspiring legacy and provides the opportunity to explore potential partnerships that could both advance tribal education and also strengthen our support for UNLV’s Native students, staff and faculty.”

The meetings will give the presidents and UNLV staff the chance to review common research needs, along with possible cooperative projects.

According to Harrah College of Hospitality dean Stowe Shoemaker: “It is imperative we work with the nation’s tribes to refine the goals, scope and format of our Tribal Education Initiative to make sure the university is addressing the unique educational needs of tribal communities.”
