An unknown woman whose body was found in north of Elko in Coal Mine Canyon has been identified.
Elko County Sheriff’s Office detectives confirmed the remains, which were discovered by a hunter late last month, to belong to 47-year-old Shannon Nye, an Elko resident, according to the Elko Daily Free Press.
“Due to the condition of the female, an identity could not be determined at the scene,” the sheriff's office stated at the time after the agency received the call, the publication reported. “A full autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death and identify the victim.”
The sheriff's office was mum as to how long the autopsy would take or if a missing persons report had been filed in regard to the woman but is treating the case as a homicide.
The investigation is ongoing, Reno’s KOLO reported.
Nye’s relatives in Washington state said she was the mother to three children, according to the Elko Daily Free Press.
The sheriff's office urges anyone with information to contact the agency at 775-748-1684.
