Gov. Steve Sisolak said that fully vaccinated individuals don’t have to don masks at events requiring vaccinations.
Partially vaccinated people — those who at least have their first jab — can attend such events but must wear a mask, the governor said.
“If a large event venue chooses to require vaccination proof for all attendees, those that are FULLY vaccinated will be allowed to take their masks off,” Sisolak, a Democrat, tweeted Aug. 16. “Partially vaccinated attendees may still attend, but they must wear their mask at the event.”
Reno Gazette Journal reported that the governor’s remarks don’t constitute a new mandate nor a requirement.
"We're giving our private sector partners the choices and flexibility to lead," Sisolak said.
The Hill reported that the current option for vaccinated events not to require masks is available for venues that can host 4,000 guests or more.
Sisolak’s announcement is in step with a trend of larger cities, such as San Francisco and New York City, which require valid proof of vaccination at indoor events, The Hill reported.
Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s method of using cases per 100,000 over the previous week to determine high transmission, Nevada — which reported more than 2,500 new COVID-19 cases and 30 deaths over the second weekend of August — joined 35 other states deemed high transmission areas, 8 News Now reported.
Amid the spike, Nevada achieved a positive milestone: half of its eligible residents are fully vaccinated.
Nevada Health Response told Reno Gazette Journal that the state officially met the 50% vaccination threshold for those age 12 and older on Aug. 19.
