This Medical Assistant Overcame Many Obstacles and now has a Rewarding Healthcare Career

Cindy Vasquez Orellana felt drawn to the medical field, so she could help patients like her mother, who need an interpreter when at their medical appointments. She overcame many obstacles and graduated with her Medical Assistant certificate from our Phoenix campus. She is now enjoying a rewarding career.

Here’s her story.

“I lived with my mom during the pandemic and even though I was attending a community college, I just didn’t feel fulfilled. My mom, a Spanish speaker, became ill and struggled with feeling alone at medical appointments and in the hospital because there was no one to interpret for her. That’s when I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field and help people, especially those struggling without a Spanish interpreter.

I enrolled in Pima Medical Institute’s Medical Assistant program, but it wasn’t easy. I faced many obstacles, struggled academically and had to retake some classes all while working overnight shifts. I can recall going to one of my instructors in tears and wanting to quit. I was reminded that it’s not about how many times we fail, but how often we get up and choose to keep going. I’m so thankful for the caring instructors who pushed me to be better. They have made such an impact on my life.

Immediately after completing my externship at Stamp Medical, I was hired. I am now part of an amazing and caring team. I have never been happier! Even with all the setbacks, tears and extra time it took to finish the program, I did it. I am proud to say I am the first graduate from my family and my journey and education doesn’t stop here, it’s only the beginning.

My mother and father were my inspiration for my career in the medical field. Pima Medical provided my education and their staff went the extra mile to help me succeed. For that, I am so grateful!”
