The Native Youth College Camp included tours of the tv studios at the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs | UNLV news release
Young Native American students recently visited the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) television studio to learn the ins and outs of news production.
According to a news release shared by UNLV, the students were able to utilize the teleprompter and the weather green screen.
According to Devan Harris, associate director for Early Outreach: “Students need to be able to see themselves, see folks who have experienced success who look like them, who sound like them, and who have had experiences that are similar.”
The release reports that visit was the result of the school’s renovated Native Youth College Camp with students from as far away as Fort McDermitt near the Oregon border in attendance.
According to Fredina Drye-Romero, an education programs professional for Indian education within the Nevada Department of Education’s Office of Inclusive Education: “That’s exactly why they are here. Because a lot of these students come from a reservation that’s isolated. They don’t get off the reservation very often. Maybe they go to Reno, but they don’t get to check out the colleges. This is a great experience for them coming here to UNLV, and it’s all paid for.”
Aside from obtaining knowledge on the operations of the newsroom, the release states that the objective of the trip was to bring Native students together in order to build bonds with one another.
