Precautions for the Labor Day Weekend

Genbusiness005

Sierra Nevada University issued the following announcement.

Dear Eagle Family,

We are approaching the close of the first week of the short block and SNO, and what a week it has been! We are inspired to have students on campus, watching them laugh and learn and seeing them off for their day trips. We are also proud and honored to be among faculty who so expertly adjusted their course plans in response to the Caldor Fire, evacuations in our surrounding Lake Tahoe communities, ever-changing air quality, and national forest closures. We especially want to thank those of you that stepped up this week despite being personally impacted by the Caldor Fire. And, all of us owe a debt of gratitude to the wildland firefighters who are at this very moment doing all that they can to keep the residents in and around Lake Tahoe safe.

Calmer winds, increased humidity, and cooler nighttime temperatures helped the many personnel and resources on the Caldor Fire hold ground yesterday and overnight. Although the fire and evacuation threats have diminished for Incline Village, we will have to contend with poor air quality in the region until the fires are extinguished. We are in close and constant contact with state and local authorities to ensure that we have the latest information on the fire, and remain prepared should conditions change. As the fire continues, so do restrictions on travel around the Tahoe Basin. Be sure you’ve signed up for E2Campus, updated your employee contact information, and keep proper identification with proof of residence and employment in your possession.

The upcoming holiday weekend gives us an opportunity to take a few days to reflect on this past week and to look ahead to the coming academic year. As we do this, keep in mind conditions can change at a moment’s notice. We learned this as we adjusted and pivoted throughout the pandemic. To this end, please make it a point throughout the weekend to keep apprised of the latest conditions regarding the Caldor Fire. Additional information and community resources for those impacted by the fire can be found here.

We encourage you to follow all of the latest public health mandates regarding COVID-19 in effect for our region – wear a mask, practice frequent handwashing and good hygiene, and seek a vaccination if you haven’t already done so. In addition, check the current AQI and use this information to guide your outdoor activity choices.

Labor Day Weekend is about many things. It is a long weekend that reinforces the sense of community in all of us. As we’ve learned over the past few days, community can often mean looking out for one another’s well-being, and being ready to pitch in if a fellow student, faculty or staff, or community member needs your help. We’ve witnessed this sense of grace and community from all of you over the past several days. Our fall semester promises to be one we will all remember – because all of you demonstrate what it means to be part of our special SNU community.

Be safe and stay vigilant this weekend.
