This week, the Nevada State AFL-CIO elected the first woman and Latina as executive secretary-treasurer, a key position within the organization.

They announced the election in a Tweet, saying, “Today, our Nevada State AFL-CIO affiliates voted to elect @LVSusanNV as our next Executive Secretary-Treasurer! She is a long-time member of @Teamsters986, serving as a shop steward for our brothers and sisters. Congratulations, @LVSusanNV!”

Assemblywoman Susie Martinez became the first woman and first Latina to serve as the head of the state federation when she was voted as the new executive secretary-treasurer by the organization’s membership. Martinez is an advocate for unions and workers’ rights, according to a post on the International Brotherhood of Teamsters' website. She is the daughter of two culinary union members.

Martinez has stated that she wants to remove the barriers that make it difficult for workers to organize and bargain and voiced her plans to advocate for the marginalized and overlooked.

“I am truly humbled that my union brothers and sisters have entrusted to me the responsibility to lead our state federation," Martinez said in a release from Nevada State AFL-CIO. "In our fight for working people, we have the opportunity to advance not only workers’ rights in our state and our nation but also to advocate for the marginalized and overlooked.”
