Rep. Steven Horsford, who represents Nevada’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of messages on October 1, 2025, detailing the impact of federal government shutdowns on employees and essential services.
In his first post, Horsford explained the immediate effects on federal workers: “Federal employees are either furloughed (sent home without pay) or required to work without pay if deemed essential. During the last major shutdown: 380,000 were furloughed. 420,000 worked without pay. Contractors usually don’t receive pay. These changes threaten essential” (October 1, 2025).
He continued by emphasizing the broader consequences of a shutdown: “Bottom line: A shutdown isn’t just political chaos—it hits families, workers, and essential services across the country.” (October 1, 2025).
Horsford also highlighted how military personnel and law enforcement are affected during these periods: ” Military personnel and federal law enforcement must keep working, also without pay. Elective medical/dental services stop at DoD facilities. Inpatient care, emergencies, and TRICARE continue.” (October 1, 2025).
Steven Horsford has served as a member of Congress for Nevada’s 4th District since replacing Ruben Kihuen in 2019 and previously held office in the Nevada Senate from 2009 to 2013. Born in Las Vegas in 1973 and currently residing there at age 49, he graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a BA in 2014.
