Rep. Steven Horsford, a U.S. Congressman representing Nevada’s 4th district since 2019, has recently voiced concerns on social media about the impact of former President Donald Trump’s policies on Nevada’s tourism and gaming industries.
On August 15, 2025, Horsford posted: “Trump promised to lower costs on Day 1, but Vegas families are paying the price.
Tourism is down 11%.
Tips are shrinking.
Hotels are half empty.
Nevadans can’t afford this “Trump Slump.” Our economy depends on tourism—and because of Trump, it’s hurting.
#TrumpSlump”
Three days later, on August 18, he addressed tax policy and its effects on Nevada’s gaming sector: ” Gambling should be fair—and so should the tax code. I support the #FairBETAct to stop the GOP’s Big Ugly Bill from taxing losses. NV gaming drives 436K jobs & $98B in impact—our economic backbone. We can’t afford policies that cheat workers, tourists & communities. #TrumpSlump”
Later that same day, Horsford reiterated his concerns about declining travel and spending: “Tourism is the backbone of Nevada’s economy. But under the #TrumpSlump, travel is down and consumer spending is falling. We can’t afford this crisis.”
Horsford has been an advocate for Nevada’s economic interests since entering Congress in 2019 after replacing Ruben Kihuen. He previously served in the Nevada Senate from 2009 to 2013 and holds a BA from the University of Nevada, Reno. Born and residing in Las Vegas, Horsford often emphasizes local economic issues tied to tourism and gaming—the sectors he describes as critical to his state’s financial health.
