Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak recently proclaimed March 11 as Social Emotional Learning Day.

“Today, I was proud to proclaim ‘Social Emotional Learning Day’ in Nevada,” Sisolak said in a Facebook post. “Social-emotional learning competencies are essential to success in our schools, workplaces and communities and allow individuals to contribute meaningfully to our society.”

Social emotional learning is a process that all young people endure, and they learn to employ all the information that they acquire to facilitate a healthy well-being, the governor’s official proclamation said.

Learning how to treat others is important, because that will help us in our homes and day-to-day lives, the proclamation continued. Knowing how to make important decisions brings with it the ability to know how to contribute well to society.

Social emotional learning can be practiced and cultivated throughout childhood and adult life, the proclamation said.

“As we emerge from this pandemic, it is incumbent on all Nevadans to support social emotional learning, particularly among Nevada’s youth, and continue to work toward creating a thriving society where physical and mental well-being is taught and nurtured,” the proclamation said. Students and society as a whole can benefit in the long run socially and economically “from the implementation of evidence-based social emotional learning programs.”
