Rep. Steven Horsford, who represents Nevada’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of updates on October 1, 2025, warning about the potential impacts of a government shutdown on key federal services and benefits.
In his first post on October 1, Horsford stated: “Food assistance is at risk. WIC could quickly run out of funding, leaving families without support. If the shutdown drags on, SNAP (food stamps) could also be impacted.”
He continued with another update concerning healthcare programs: “Medicare, Medicaid & disability insurance benefits continue if the shutdown is under 3 months. But about half of CMS staff would be furloughed, causing delays and longer call times.”
Addressing travel and public facilities, Horsford added: ” Air travel continues, but some services may slow down. Passport Agency remains open, but availability may drop if local facilities close. National parks may close entirely or operate with limited services (like trash pickup and campground operations).”
Steven Horsford has represented Nevada’s 4th District in Congress since 2019 after previously serving in the Nevada Senate from 2009 to 2013. Born in Las Vegas in 1973 and currently residing there, he graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree.
