The City of Las Vegas held an artwork dedication ceremony last week within a hallway of the city’s Municipal Courthouse.
According to a news release shared by the Las Vegas government, city officials and the public were on hand as local artist Gig Depio’s two-dimensional artwork was revealed.
According to Chief Judge Bert Brown: “The Municipal Court is a public building that serves our community, and it is only fitting that we have beautiful artwork in this space. We hope to add additional works of art to our courthouse in the future.”
The city reported that Depio’s piece has the theme “equal justice for all” and he gave the artwork the moniker of “Level the Playing Field,” which showcases milestones in the city’s history.
According to Councilwoman Olivia Diaz: “I’m proud to unveil a public art piece that speaks to our Las Vegas history and commitment to justice. We know our residents and visitors value art, and this project gives us an opportunity to highlight the work of a talented local artist. We look forward to bringing more art projects like this to downtown and throughout Ward 3.”
The release stated that artwork cost $20,000 and that the canvas on display measures 13 feet wide and 6 feet tall and weighs roughly 50 pounds.
“This original work of art by Gig Depio is now at home in the perfect place, the lobby of the Las Vegas Municipal Court House,” said Mayor Carolyn Goodman. “Focusing on the mission of providing equal justice to all, the court is proud of how the artist has interpreted that fundamental mission for all to see.”
