The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has upgraded its Wi-Fi coverage to include areas of outside of campus buildings.
According to a news release issued by the university, the campus received a 100-gigabit upgrade this summer that will increase internet speed five-fold and is expected to allow people to connect to the internet quicker.
“NSHE already had the infrastructure for the 100-gigabit network,” Eric Kepschull, principal network engineer for NSHE, which is the educational internet service provider for the state, said in the release.
The office of information technology worked with the Nevada System of Higher Education to swap obsolete network hardware with a new router.
According to Andrew Lilleg, senior network engineer for OIT: “Here at UNLV, everyone consumes information online for various reasons, maybe for streaming videos or extensive research. Because broadband needs differ, network capabilities were expanded to meet campus demands.”
The internet upgrade is expected to help develop the R1 institution, a Carnegie designated status of high achievement.
According to Lilleg: “Researchers gather massive amounts of data, which requires a lot of bandwidth. With the improved network speed and capacity, they can quickly process and share large datasets with peers at other institutions for their research projects.”
