City of Reno recently issued the following announcement.
The City of Reno would like to advise the public that, starting on Tuesday, May 10, artist Charly Malpass will begin painting her Bluebirds Among Sage mural on the City Hall Parking Garage.
This project will last approximately one week and includes temporary lane and sidewalk closures along First Street, Center Street, and Lincoln Alley. This will not prevent access to or limit use of the garage. In the event that access adjacent to any parking spaces is needed, cones will be set out the day before the work is to be completed.
Paint will be applied using brushes and rollers, eliminating any concerns of overspray that typically result from spray-on application.
About the Project
On February 23, 2022, the Reno City Council approved an Agreement to commission Malpass for the City Hall Parking Garage Mural Project in the amount of $70,000 from Room Tax. View the Project Proposal for more information.
On January 24, 2022, the Reno Arts and Culture Commission (RACC) approved the recommendation from the Public Art Committee (PAC) to commission Malpass for the mural project. The RACC identified the City Hall Parking Garage as an ideal location for public art.
Acquisition and renovation of the City Hall Parking Garage has been a seven-year-long project, starting with acquisition of the garage — an asset now valued at over $4 million — for the nominal fee of $10. It proceeded with the addition of a new bank of elevators for ADA access, structural repairs, improved LED lighting, the addition of EV charging stations, and reconfiguration of the garage to provide residents with free, premium parking when visiting city hall.
“The new mural is the capstone of the Parking Garage project, revitalizing an aging asset and adding to the vibrancy of downtown,” Reno City Councilmember Naomi Duerr said. “This project showcases the value of renovating older buildings, highlights our growing arts scene to visitors and locals alike, and will liven up our downtown and add pizzazz to the Reno City Plaza, already a great arts and culture space where multiple events are held each year.”
